Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and had trouble recognizing your own reflection? When our identities shift, what are some of the triggers for transformation? Join moderator Rebecca Wood Barrett in conversation with authors Katherine Fawcett (The Swan Suit) and Karen Lee White (The Silence) for readings and discussion of themes in their latest books: the disguises and masks we don’t even know we’re wearing; the way in which rising passion and the ebb of love can define and transform who we are; and how, ultimately, we can only reclaim our selves by taking a daring, instinctual leap into the unknown.
Katherine Fawcett is a Montreal-born, Calgary-raised writer, currently living in Squamish, BC. Her first book, The Little Washer of Sorrows (Thistledown, 2015) was a finalist for the Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Fiction of the Fantastical in 2016, shortlisted for the ReLit award in the same year, and was recently translated into French. Her second book, The Swan Suit (Douglas & McIntyre, 2020) was released two days before COVID was declared a global pandemic. When she isn't writing, Katherine teaches music at the Whistler and Squamish Waldorf Schools. She enjoys mushroom-hunting, star-gazing, playing cards and some forms of physical activities.
Karen Lee White is Northern Salish, Tuscarora, Chippewa and Scots from Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Adopted into the Daklaweidi Wolf Clan of the Interior Tlingit/Tagish people on whose land her first novel The Silence (2018 Exile Editions) unfolds; in 2018. The Silence went into a second printing within six weeks of release. In 2018 Karen was commissioned by the Banff for Fables for the 21st Century, and in 2017 Karen was awarded an Indigenous Art Award for Writing by the Hnatyshyn Foundation. Her work has appeared in Exile Editions That Damned Beaver anthology, EXILE/EQ Magazine, Impact: Colonialism in Canada, and other literary journals. A playwright, she has been commissioned by theatres in Vancouver and Victoria.
